Following Christ in joyful obedience and devotion through faith in the word of God demonstrates one’s possession of eternal life. While we are commanded to obey God’s word, it is the Spirit of God that works in the lives of His children to supply the grace and strength necessary to do so. This does not mean that sinless perfection can be achieved. (I John 1:10). Rather, it means the impossible burden of striving to obey God in our own strength and wisdom is lifted so that we can find His yoke is easy, His burden is light (Matthew 11:30) and His commands are not grievous (I John 5:3). This truth strengthens the sinner in knowing that the service God requires is possible in the strength that He alone provides (1 Peter 4:11).
